Changing speed plays the video faster or slower: at 2x it lasts half as long, at 0.5x twice as long. Every frame's timestamp is scaled, and the video is re-encoded so it plays at the new speed in any player.
Sound is sped up or slowed down along with the picture, which raises or lowers its pitch the way a tape does. If that isn't what you want, choose Remove sound. Very fast speeds sample fewer frames so the result stays at a normal frame rate of 60 fps or less.
